Although there are many creative businesses today that were started on the internet,  we may forget about those successful businesses that were profitable in the last century, before the internet ever started.  Maybe even long before that.

What did those creative entrepreneurs do to try to make money without holding down the traditional 9 to 5 job?  (Isn’t that really 8 to 5?)  I am going to explore through my blog posts a number of those businesses.  While I am mentioning them, try to think about the possibility of starting a similar business in your community, and to also think about applying that business as an internet business.  Why not?  If it was successful back then, what’s to stop it from making money today?

(1)  The first business I am going to talk about is nature’s way of getting rid of rats.  Did you know that a rat has a natural enemy?  It’s called the ferret.  People have operated successful businesses in the past, raising and selling ferrets to help people get rid of those pesky vermin.  Some of their customers even bought them as pets.   FIND OUT ABOUT FERRETS

A ferret is a weasel-like carnivore, about 14 inches long, usually white with red eyes and used to hunt rabbits, rats, etc.  Many ship companies use ferrets to rid their ships of rats, and they are also used by warehouses for the same purpose.

To raise and breed ferrets, you only need to start with 20 or 30.  Your herd will increase to several thousand, depending on how much land you have that would be available for this unusual enterprise.

The original article describing this unusual business, explained that a Mr. Gilman in an eastern state had a very profitable business, (partly because there wasn’t much competition).

Can you see yourself doing this?  Maybe there is some vacant land in your area that you could lease for this purpose.

     There are many small businesses that you can choose from to run. This is especially true because of the internet, which never seems to stop exploding.

     Besides the internet, there has always been a business many people really want to get into. This is called the mail order business. It’s usually easy to get started and doesn’t cost too much money like a franchise would. You may not see the space ads in magazines much any more where a person would mail in an order from a coupon. You can still do that, but other more convenient options would be to go to a web page or call a telephone number and talk to a sales clerk who then takes the order.  It sounds exciting because sales could go into large volumes.

     Many people these days are still trying out the mail order home based business. They can have any number of reasons for this. One could be a single mother trying to gain some extras income, or a student who does not have the means to travel distances for part time employment. Whatever the reason, there seems to be a growing trend in this field. It must be noted however; this is not the business for everyone. This type of business can take a great deal of patience and dedication to make it successful.

     You may have found a unique product to sell, or making jewelry or crafts; the list of mail order home businesses has an endless potential of opportunities.  It is a long proven way to sell your products.  The more unusual the better.  Information products are great because they usually solve problems people may have.

     If you find a product that shows that there is a demand for and it isn’t in the stores yet, you could start by running classified ads telling people where they can find out more about it. They can write for more information or go to a webpage. Your supplier can actually ship the product right to your customer, so you don’t have to invest in inventory. This is called dropshipping.

     Wouldn’t that be great if you get to sit at home and make some extra cash with the potential for a full time business? Many people could become discouraged with slow initial results. You have to be a little patient with mail order because initially there is testing that needs to be done, and you have to wait for the results.  But there are ways to analyze results before all of them are in.

     Jewelry making is a nice mail order venture. You can get all your supplies sent to you in bulk. This could be a tricky business as many people can have trouble assembling things to begin with, let alone something so tiny as a pair of earrings. If you have trouble doing small tasks very multiple chores all day long, you might consider other types of mail order products. This can be a great project for someone with time and patience to get this off the ground, or can employ others to assist them at a small cost.

     Direct mail is a form of the mail order business. This can be very profitable. You would mail advertisements to potential customers.  Although businesses have leaned more toward the internet, direct mail can work, especially now that there is less competition for direct sales in the mail box because of the internet.
