Occasionally if you come up with a money-making idea, it can be used right away. Just let your imagination run wild and try not to be practical. You get your creativity going this way. But no matter how your crazy money-making ideas may seem, there is usually a way to bring them into the real world. This first example explains it.

RENTAL CABINS IN THE AIR

I started with this crazy thought: “What if people could rent a cabin up in the sky for the weekend?” Right away my mind tries to make sense of the idea, and because the over-all goal is to have profitable creations, it looks for ways to make it into a money-making idea. At first thought, I imagined there were cabins which are suspended under large hot-air or helium balloons.

As much fun as it might be, this didn’t seem very practical. When I explored the idea further, though, I wondered if existing balloon-ride businesses could tap into other markets. If, for example, the gondolas were outfitted properly, and the balloons tethered, so they could be allowed to float two thousand feet overhead, would meditators then pay for a peaceful meditation retreat in the sky?

Another thought came to mind. Balloons could be high in the air, but easily cranked back in on a line. This might be simpler and cheaper than traditional rides, which involve chase vehicles and unpredictable landings. Perhaps this could be another way to make money with the balloons, charging a lower rate for simple up and down rides, and so getting new customers that couldn’t afford the usual rides.

This is how a crazy idea comes back to earth. Perhaps even the “weekend cabin in the sky” idea could someday be a money making idea, but if not, that’s okay. The point here is to get the creative flow going, and then find more practical ways to channel the output.

Scan the list and stop on any of the crazy ideas that catch your attention. Chances are good that you can find some way to transform it into a more practical idea, and that is the point. This exercise in imagination may be fun, but it is also a profitable technique for generating money-making ideas.

Finally, we use our rough-draft as a basis to begin revisions, eventually ending up with a final draft, the “perfect” version.

Making a plan for tomorrow is a sound business strategy. It’s good to spend time thinking about the future, and how to handle the challenges it will bring. But, if we want to succeed, we must create the future by taking action today. We can’t possibly predict everything that might happen once we start doing business. Microsoft started out selling programming software. After a few years, an opportunity presented itself to sell a computer Operating System to IBM, and they took it. The result was MS-DOS (which they didn’t even create themselves, they bought it from someone else when they saw how much money they could make!), followed by Windows; quite possibly one of the most lucrative products ever. If Bill Gates and Paul Allen, the founders of Microsoft, had sat on the sidelines of the growing computer industry thinking “Programming software is an OK idea, but it’s not perfect, there isn’t a big enough market for it…we need something better”, would they be where they are today? Would IBM have given them that golden opportunity? Not likely.

No, it took Michelangelo over 3 years of effort to release his masterpiece from the stone, one tiny chip of marble at a time. It probably wasn’t very pretty after only 1 month, or even a year. But years of careful improvement it resulted in a classic work of art.

I hope I’ve made my point. Do something. Do anything! If you do something, money making and the result isn’t what you wanted, what’s the worst that could happen? You either have something to improve upon, or you have a very good idea of an approach that doesn’t work (think of it as addition by subtraction…the process of elimination).
