CORPORATIONS; ARE THEY ETHICAL OR UNETHICAL?

Are corporations and companies ethical or not ethical?

Are there ethics in today’s business world? I don’t have a good feeling about that. I remember back in the 90s, there was a corporate following among corporations. One of which was ethics. Having good ethics became a priority for companies. One big company would display how well they were ethically. Then other corporations would follow suit. This was the way it was back then. One corporation would do something big like that, then others would follow. Actually, I think that is the same as it is today, but not in a good way.

Who hasn’t experienced a decline in customer service? And there is automation instead of human interaction. How frustrating that can be. Then you have people in other countries responding to your requests. I am sure they are good people, but the language barrier is there. Also, can you actually trust them? I don’t think it is ethical in the way companies ignore your requests for help, or sidestep it. They come up with excuses saying that this doesn’t fall under a certain number of criteria that they must adhere to. This criteria of course is set up by corporation management.

The population gets bigger. More and more people get online. The more people who need service, the less service they get. I guess that the bottom line here is that they are all trying to cut costs. What will the net profit be in the next quarter. Can they live up to the budgets. How are the other corporations doing? They check each other out and copy what they are doing in order to increase net profit.

You would think that poor customer service is a bad thing that would lead to less customers. Maybe they just reflect on that and decide what they are doing is good for the bottom line. That is where ethics come in. What they are doing is not ethical, and the net profit is much more important.

On the other hand, there are companies that practice the golden rule “do onto others as you would have them do onto you.” These companies are active in their communities, give to charities, and are good to customers and employees. These six companies are at the top: Aflac, Ecolab, International Paper, Kao Corporation, Milliken & Company, and PepsiCo.

There is a lot to be said about this; either ethical or not. What is the criteria? What do you think?
